Aviemore Triathlon

Welcome to the Aviemore Triathlon – an exciting, challenging, fun, and a little bit bonkers off-road Swim + Mountain Bike + Trail Run race.

There are two courses to suit all abilities from newcomers to racing snakes. Both are based on the beautiful Loch Morlich and Glenmore Forest in the heart of the spectacular Cairngorm National Park.

Long Hard Durty: 1500m Open Water Swim, 18km Technical Mountain Bike, 9km Trail Run  | START TIME APPROX. 0900

Short Fast Durty: 750m Open Water Swim, 12km Mountain Bike, 5km Trail Run | START TIME APPROX. 0930

Well, have we found a great venue an off-road race!

In the heart of the beautiful Cairngorms National Park, and in the shadow of the Cairngorm Mountain itself – you’ll be swimming in the cool clean water of Loch Morlich, Biking on superb trails in the huge Glenmore Forest, and finishing yourself off with a scenic run through stunning woodland and open hillsides.

The Aviemore Triathon is based at the Badaguish Centre, right in the middle of the forest. The race will be raising funds for the Centre – they help people with a disability enjoy an outdoor holiday – a cause that we know you’ll agree is worth supporting 100%. We’re encouraging all entrants to raise money for the Centre either via sponsorship or donation. Read more here.

The Swim section will be in the beautiful, clean, freshwater Loch Morlich.

It’s one of the few inland beaches that appears on SEPA’s approved Bathing Beaches list. Wetsuits are likely to be compulsory – you don’t need a swim-specific one though, a general cheapo multipurpose watersports one will be fine if that’s what you’ve got.

Similarly, we’re OK with sleeveless and shorty suits.

Water temp is usually around a balmy 14 degrees.

The Mountain Bike section is on a mix of great fast forest roads (some less well used, and so a bit rougher), and shorter fun-dabby-dozy twisty, narrow rooty forest singletrack.

In general, we will be designing a course that is mostly ‘Blue’ standard or below for the Short Fast Durty course (with a small amount of fun singletrack thrown in)

The Long Hard Durty course will have some more ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ sections – if you’ve practiced on a mountain bike before the race, you’ll have a quicker and happier time! You’ll need a mountain bike, and Helmets are compulsory.

The Run will be on a mix of forest trails, and includes a section of open hill running (Long Hard Durty only) with breath-taking views.

Take 30 seconds to look around you!. Bits of the course meander through rough and trackless natural forest. Mmmm, lovely 🙂

The Aviemore Triathlon will be hosted by the Badaguish Centre in Glenmore Forest., this will form race HQ, registration area, car parking, Transition 2 and the finish line.

The address of Race HQ is;
