Aviemore Triathlon

September 20, 2020 9:00 am

We’re sorry to be emailing you to let you know, that despite our best efforts, we have to cancel this weekend’s Aviemore Triathlon. Race packs are ready and our team are in Aviemore setting up the course, so we’re beyond disappointed and truly sorry to be sharing this news at such short notice.

As a way of explanation, at zero notice (around 11am this morning) we were informed by the Scottish Government that later today they’re changing the guidelines around participation sporting events, and that these changes are effective immediately. These changes make the running of Aviemore Triathlon impossible.

We know the question around refunds and deferrals will be important to you. Rather than rush this and get it wrong, please bear with us. We’re dealing with a very fast moving situation right now and we’ll be in touch directly with you next week to discuss options, which will include full refunds and deferrals, including for those who have recently withdrawn from the race. Please, please, please resist the urge to email us.

The weather forecast is great this weekend, so if you have accommodation booked please come and support the local economy safely. The Badaguish Café will be open for take-away food and drinks and they’d love to see you.

We’d like to thank a number of people for their amazing support over the last difficult few days: Event Scotland, Triathlon Scotland, Badaguish/Speyside Trust, Forest and Land Scotland and BBC Scotland/The Adventure Show.

We’ll be back in touch next week and appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Long Hard Durty: 500m Open Water Swim, 18km Technical Mountain Bike, 9km Trail Run  | START TIME APPROX. 0900

Short Fast Durty: 500m Open Water Swim, 12km Mountain Bike, 5km Trail Run | START TIME APPROX. 0930

Short Fast Durty (Non Competitive): 500m Open Water Swim, 12km Mountain Bike, 5km Trail Run | START TIME APPROX. tbc

What is Non Competitive? In 2020, we’re trialling a a non-competitive (untimed) opt-in wave at the Short Fast Durty Tri in 2020 alongside the regular competitive/timed waves. This is in response to feedback that some participants are interested in the challenge, but not so interested in being timed, or being listed in results. You will still be issued with a dibber (for safety purposes), but we won’t publish your result, we will just list you as finishing. Just select the Non-Competitive option on Entry Central to sign up to this wave.

A Greener Aviemore Triathlon!

  1. Feed station cups are our biggest source of waste. So we’re stopping using them. Completely. There will be no cups at feed stations. You need to bring your own or, if you don’t have one, we’ll provide you with a re-usable soft folding cup with your race entry in 2020. You will need to carry this with you and use it on the course if you wish to use feed stations.
  2. T-shirts: some of you love them and some of you don’t. If you’re the latter, we’ll now give you the option to donate the cost of your event tee to our chosen charity, The John Muir Trust. You can make this selection when you sign up via Entry Central by choosing No T-Shirt. Your entry cost will remain the same and we’ll donate the equivalent value to The John Muir Trust.

We appreciate your help in ensuring our events make minimal impact on the environment.

The Swim section will be in the beautiful, clean, freshwater Loch Morlich.

It’s one of the few inland beaches that appears on SEPA’s approved Bathing Beaches list. Wetsuits are likely to be compulsory – you don’t need a swim-specific one though, a general cheapo multipurpose watersports one will be fine if that’s what you’ve got.

Similarly, we’re OK with sleeveless and shorty suits.

Water temp is usually around a balmy 14 degrees.

Following recent reports of Blue Green Algae, water testing has been carried out at the Loch.  Below are water testing results for Loch Morlich

The Mountain Bike section is on a mix of great fast forest roads (some less well used, and so a bit rougher), and shorter fun-dabby-dozy twisty, narrow rooty forest singletrack.

In general, we will be designing a course that is mostly ‘Blue’ standard or below for the Short Fast Durty course (with a small amount of fun singletrack thrown in)

The Long Hard Durty course will have some more ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ sections – if you’ve practiced on a mountain bike before the race, you’ll have a quicker and happier time! You’ll need a mountain bike, and Helmets are compulsory.

The Run will be on a mix of forest trails, and includes a section of open hill running (Long Hard Durty only) with breath-taking views.

Take 30 seconds to look around you!. Bits of the course meander through rough and trackless natural forest. Mmmm, lovely 🙂
